CBS Poll: Most Americans Think Trump Russia Probe 'Politically Motivated'

Fifty-three percent of Americans say that the special counsel investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 elections is politically motivated, while 44 percent insist it is justified, according to a CBS poll released on Tuesday.

This compares with 48 percent who said the probe was politically motivated in December, while 46 percent said it was justified.

Other results of the survey include:

  • As would be expected, the results are very partisan, with only 11 percent of Republicans saying the probe is justified, while 72 percent of Democrats say it is. Among independents, 54 percent say the investigation is politically motivated, while 42 percent say it is justified.
  • Despite this, 76 percent of Americans say that President Donald Trump should cooperate if he is asked to be interviewed, while only 20 percent say he should not. However, in January, when the same question was asked, 84 percent thought the president should cooperate with the probe.
  • Among Republicans in the latest poll, 53 percent said Trump should cooperate with the investigation, while 91 percent of Democrats thought so and 76 percent of independents.
  • When asked what Republicans in Congress do about the probe, 33 percent of Americans said they should try to end it, while 64 percent said they should let it continue.
  • Among Republicans, only 29 percent thought the GOP in Congress should allow the investigation to continue, while 90 percent of Democrats thought so and 65 percent of independents.

This poll was conducted by telephone May 3-6 among a random sample of 1,101 adults nationwide. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cellphones.

Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. The data have been weighted to reflect U.S. Census figures on demographic variables. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points.
