Students at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz love heaping praise on former President Barack Obama, and they really love that he’s a Nobel Peace Prize recipient (he received the prestigious award in 2009). They’re just not able to explain exactly why Obama obtained his prize.
These same students scoff at the idea of President Donald Trump’s being awarded a Nobel.
Trump has recently been mentioned as a Nobel Peace Prize candidate for his actions in bringing North and South Korea together in historic peace talks aimed at achieving an end to longstanding conflict on that peninsula.
UC Santa Cruz students say he doesn’t deserve it, however — calling the Nobel “too good” for Trump, according to Campus Reform (see the video below and the students’ telling remarks).
“Hell, no. That’s a joke. What has he done for peace?” one student told Cabot Phillips, media director for Campus Reform, when asked whether the president deserved a Nobel. Said another student, “No. I feel like he just thinks that he deserves many awards.”
“It’s just too good of a prize for him to have credit for,” said another student, using somewhat garbled grammar.
These college students must not have learned that even a South Korean leader lauded the president for his actions on behalf of the region. “Clearly, credit goes to President Trump,” South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said recently, according to The New York Times and other outlets, adding, “He’s been determined to come to grips with this [the Korean conflict] since day one.”
When Phillips of Campus Reform asked the same students whether Obama deserved his Nobel, they emphatically and almost unanimously agreed that he did.
But what did Obama do to earn a trip to Oslo? Most college kids interviewed were “speechless” when asked to describe exactly what Obama actually did, Phillips said.
