Bernie Sanders' Son Running For Congress, Slams Out-Of-Touch Dems

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ son Levi, who is running for Congress in New Hampshire, criticized the Democratic Party for ignoring the needs of working class voters, The Washington Free Beacon reported on Tuesday.

Levi Sanders announced in February that he would seek a seat in the state’s 1st Congressional District as a Democrat. He is running on a platform similar to that of his father, stressing the need for universal health care, free college tuition, and a higher minimum wage.

However, in an interview with the Independent, he said “It’s not about the fact that I am Bernie Sanders’ son – sure, obviously, that is more interesting – but the real issue is every day I get to see the economic pain that people are under.”

Levi Sanders explained what inspired him to enter politics “was working in legal services for almost 18 years and being a union member for 23 years, “which means that “every day I see people getting beaten up by the system. I talk to single mums and they are at their wits’ end, they are not even making $15 an hour, which is so crucial at the most basic level to make ends meet.”

He stressed that while he thinks the presidency of Donald Trump has been a disaster, the Republican Party has managed to engage working-class Americans, bemoaning that “The Democratic Party has done a very poor job of bolstering people’s confidence and self-esteem, and that has significant consequences when it comes to reaching out to low-income and working-class people.”

He particularly blamed Hillary Clinton’s “deplorable” comments for alienating many working-class voters.

Sanders, who is 49 years old, emphasized that a major problem was “a high proportion of low-income people don’t vote. We need to get people engaged and excited in the political process and how voting impacts their lives.”
