A woman gave birth to a baby by surprise on a remote Brazilian island, according to Agence France-Presse Monday. The other catch: birthing on this island is banned.

Fernando de Noronha, a small island in the Atlantic with roughly 3,000 inhabitants, just had its first birth in the past 12 years, Agence France-Presse reported. Pregnant women are expected to give birth on the mainland in the Brazilian city of Natal for safety reasons, which is 227 miles away from the island. However, this unnamed 22-year-old woman claimed she did not even know she was pregnant until she went into labor Friday and delivered a baby girl Saturday in a bathroom, Newsweek reported.

“The mother, who does not want to be identified, went into labor at home,” Fernando de Noronha’s officials told Globo.com in a statement. “The family says it wasn’t aware of the pregnancy. The young woman’s first child was born on the mainland.” (RELATED: REPORT: Brazilian Women Are Trying To Get Impregnated By Sperm From White American Men)

“On Friday night I had pains and when I went to the bathroom I saw something coming down between my legs. That’s when the child’s father came and picked it up. It was a baby, a girl. I was dumbstruck,” the woman told Globo.com. The woman also noted that she previously took a pregnancy test, but it tested negative.

Fernando de Noronha is about six miles long, and is a part of the 21-island Fernando de Noronha archipelago. However, this is the only island of that formation that is inhabited by humans, according to Lonely Planet.
