Trump Says US Is Talking To North Korea About Saving The Summit

President Donald Trump said the cancelled summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may still happen — either on the original date or at a later point in time.

“We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the summit,” Trump tweeted Friday evening, explaining the unprecedented summit will likely still be held in Singapore.

The president canceled his planned summit with Kim Thursday, citing North Korean hostility — specifically state media reports criticizing administration officials like White House National Security Adviser John Bolton and Vice President Mike Pence.

“I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote in his letter to Kim cancelling the summit. (RELATED: Trump Cancels US-North Korea Summit)

North Korea responded quickly, calling the move regrettable.

North Korea “would like to make known to the U.S. side once again that we have the intent to sit with the U.S. side to solve [the] problem regardless of ways at any time,” the North Korean foreign ministry said in an official statement carried in a state media report.

Trump considered North Korea’s message a positive sign, describing the response as “warm” and “productive.” (RELATED: Trump Expresses Hope After North Korea Says It’s Still Willing To Talk)

Throughout the day Friday, the president has repeatedly indicated the summit might not be permanently finished. His most recent tweet suggests there may still be hope for the Trump-Kim summit.
