In honor of John Wayne’s birthday on Saturday, we made a list of his 10 greatest movies of all time to celebrate the man nicknamed “Duke.”

Born Marion Mitchell Morrison, Wayne is probably one of the most beloved celebrities of the last century. The legendary actor was born in 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. He got his first big break in Hollywood when he got the role in director John Ford’s “Stagecoach” in 1939. But it wasn’t until his role in “True Grit” in 1969 as the rugged yet lovable hero, Rooster Cogburn, that he finally took home his very first Academy Award for Best Actor.

Picking just 10 of Wayne’s best works with a library spanning close to 200 appearances on the big screen proved to be a fun challenge. We took a look through his scores for his biggest movies and combined them with a bit of our own personal favorites to come up with the following list. Of course his part as Sean Thornton, the Irish-American boxer who meets and falls in love with Maureen O’Hara in “Quiet Man” made our list. But check out the link to see if your favorites also made the cut.

While it is always tricky trying to please everyone, we are pretty sure even the biggest fans would have to agree that these go down as memorable moments in movie history.

Happy Birthday, Duke!
