Silicon Valley Throwing Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars At Dems In San Francisco Mayoral Race

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to San Francisco mayoral candidates’ super PACs in the June 5 special election, Recode reported, and all that money is going to Democrats.

Some of the Silicon Valley donors include Twitter co-founder and former CEO Evan Williams, who donated $100,000 to super PACs supporting London Breed.

Breed was the acting mayor after Ed Lee died of cardiac arrest on Dec. 12 until Jan. 23, when the Board of Supervisors selected Mark Farrell to serve as interim mayor until the special election. Gayle Conway donated $200,500 to San Franciscans Against Domestic Violence, which ran a controversial ad that accused Democratic candidate Jane Kim of supporting a state representative accused of sexual assault, SFWeekly reported on April 27.

Cryptocurrency founder Chris Larsen, worth an estimated $60 billion “on paper,” donated $49,000 to a super PAC supporting Breed as well. (RELATED: Wonder What A Million Dollar House In Silicon Valley Looks Like? You’ll Be Shocked)

Breed had a consistent lead in polls until an April 15 poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research showed Mark Leno was the new favorite at 29 percent, with Breed close behind at 27 and the third place candidate, Kim, at 17 percent.

Almost all of the candidates are Democrats, including the three in the lead and the likely winner of the election. Amy Farah Weiss is a self-described Democratic Socialist. Ellen Lee Zhou is non-partisan but has more conservative positions than her counter-parts, relatively speaking. And candidate Richie Greenberg is endorsed by the GOP.
