House Dems: White House Ignoring GAO Requests

House Democrats are demanding a hearing regarding the White House ignoring requests for information from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

“We are writing to request that you hold an immediate hearing on the dramatic decision by the White House to obstruct investigations by our independent investigators at the Government Accountability Office,” Democratic lawmakers wrote in a letter led by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.

“We ask that the committee obtain testimony from the White House Counsel and General Counsel of GAO.”

The lawmakers cited a letter from the GAO’s general counsel Thomas Armstrong and White House counsel Don McGahn.

“I understand that attorneys from your office and the National Security Council (NSC) will not respond to the inquiries or otherwise engage with GAO staff during the course of our reviews… this approach represents a clear departure from past practice,” the letter from Armstrong read.

Armstrong added that the GAO has asked for meetings on a number of topics over the past year, such as the cost of presidential travel and security measures, inspector general office vacancies, and the role of the National Security Council in conflict prevention efforts.

Robert Shea, who worked with the GAO as associated director for administration and government performance at the Office of Management and Budget during the George W. Bush administration, said that the executive branch should “at a minimum respond to a request for meetings or conversations,” GovernmentExec.com reported.
