GOP Rep. Mark Sanford — a former South Carolina governor who’s never lost a bid for political office — is sweating Tuesday’s primary against a newcomer who has portrayed him as a disloyal Never-Trumper, Politico reported.
According to Politico, Sanford has launched an 11th-hour, $380,000 barrage of commercials going after state Republican Rep. Katie Arrington, is barnstorming his district and laid out in a full-page letter to a local newspaper “the list of things I have gotten done” on behalf of voters, even posting his cell phone number in case they had questions.
First elected to political office in 1994, Sanford hasn’t spent money on TV advertising in five years — until now.
“It’s easier to get the truth out of the White House than to get lunch money out of Mark Sanford, so I’d say that any race in which a challenger convinces him to spend real money is a serious one,” Rob Godfrey, a former top adviser to ex-South Carolina GOP Gov. Nikki Haley, told Politico.
In an interview over the weekend, Sanford told Politico his disagreements with President Donald Trump aren’t personal.
“I’m not looking for disagreement with the administration,” Sanford told Politico. “But it comes to, you cannot walk away from it if you’re really listening to the people I spend so much time with here at home.”
His opposition has given an opening to Arrington, Politico reported; she’s aired a spree of TV commercials portraying Sanford as anti-Trump.
“We need a seat at the table,” she told Politico. “Our president is going to be the president until 2020 at a minimum, or 2024, and Mark has ostracized him to the point where there will never be a seat at the table for him.”
