Mark Sanford Blasts Lack of Consequences to Trump 'Lies'

A vocal critic of President Donald Trump accused him of lying in a new interview and said the lack of consequences stemming from those lies will hurt society moving forward.

Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., fell short in this week’s Republican primary, meaning he is now a lame duck congressman serving his final months in office. He spoke with NBC’s Chuck Todd for an interview slated to air Sunday.

After bringing up the 2009 extramarital affair scandal that he said brought “incredible consequences” onto him, he explained how that has shaped his view of Trump.

“Maybe the reason I’m so outspoken on this now is there is no seeming consequence to the president and lies. And if we accept that as a society, it is going to have incredibly harmful consequences in the way that we operate going forward, based on the construct of the Founding Fathers,” Sanford told Todd in an interview snippet released Friday.

Sanford was then asked why congressional Republican leaders are not speaking out against Trump. Sanford and others have paid a price politically by criticizing the president by being voted out of office.

“People are running for the hills,” Sanford said. “An old-time senator told me years ago, the name of the game is staying in the game.”

Sanford admitted Thursday that his failure to embrace Trump and pledge his allegiance to him cost him the primary election.
