Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., echoed his support Sunday for President Donald Trump’s push back on China in a potential trade war, but said the focus needs to solely be on China and not our other allies.
“I think what he’s doing on China is right,” Schumer told host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” on 970 AM-N.Y. “Let’s face it, John, China takes total advantage of the United States. They steal our intellectual property using cyber theft . . . the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind.”
Where the Democratic leader differs from the Republican president is “erratic” behavior that has President Trump threatening trade wars with everyone doing business with the U.S.
“Sometimes the president’s erratic,” Schumer told Catsimatidis. “You don’t know what he’s going to do one day to the next. If it’s negotiation to get some advantages, that’s one thing.
“You can’t have a trade war against the whole world. We should be focusing on China.”
Before his appearance, Schumer had tweeted approval Friday of President Trump’s 25 percent tariff on $50 billion of goods from China.
.@realDonaldTrump’s actions on China are on the money. China is our real trade enemy, & their theft of intellectual property & their refusal to let our companies compete fairly threatens millions of future US jobs. https://t.co/28UM7p9v2c

“If we do nothing, tens of millions of America jobs, good paying jobs over the next decades, will be robbed by China,” Schumer said. “So, it’s going to take a little bit of toughness at the beginning. China will balk back. But they need us more than we need them.
“President Trump is right about that. And we should be strong. So, I thought what he did on China is right.”
