Outrage over the Trump administration’s forced separation of undocumented immigrants from their children at the border with Mexico has resulted in the largest single fundraiser ever on Facebook, NBC News reported Tuesday.
By midday Tuesday, more than $5.2 million had been raised in the fundraiser, created by Silicon Valley couple Charlotte and Dave Willner on Saturday for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (Raices), the largest immigration legal services provider in Texas.
There has been widespread condemnation of President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, especially as Americans view numerous harrowing images of terrified children being taken away from their families.
One picture, of a Honduran toddler crying as her mother was detained, inspired the Willners to start their fundraiser.
“It was the closest thing we could do to hugging that kid,” Dave Willner told The Mercury News.
The Willners reportedly have a 2-year-old daughter, the same age as the toddler in the photo.
The Willners had originally aimed to raise $1,500, which is the minimum needed to cover bond fees for one parent to retrieve a child from government custody while awaiting an immigration hearing.
Raices told NBC the donations will change lives.
“We’ve been occasionally crying around the office all day when we check the fundraising totals,” Raices said in a statement. “This is such a profound rejection of the cruel policies of this administration. And there are many people who are deciding not to look away but to do something. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
