CNN Poll: Enthusiastic Voters Favor Democrats by 15 percent

Enthusiastic voters favor Democrats, 55 to 40 percent, in the upcoming midterm elections according to a CNN poll released Wednesday.

Democrats have a strong chance of recapturing the House this November — they need to pick up 23 seats in order to upend Republicans as the majority party — and even have a shot at winning back the Senate, but several recent polls have shown Republicans closing the gap.

CNN’s survey, conducted between June 14-17 among a random national sample of 1,012 adults, also showed Democrats gaining ground on the generic ballot question, with 50 percent of voters saying they would vote for their Democratic Party’s candidates in their congressional district, compared to 42 percent who said they would vote for their Republican Party’s candidate if elections for Congress were being held today. In May, the difference was just three points.

Fifty percent of Democrats said they were extremely or very enthusiastic about voting, while 43 percent of Republicans felt that way.

The CNN poll also found 50 percent of people surveyed had a favorable opinion of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is battling a typically fatal form of brain cancer and has not been in Washington, D.C., since September.
