Gillibrand Brushes Off Soros' Criticism After Franken Scandal

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is defending her actions regarding disgraced former Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., saying she does not regret calling for his resignation, despite catching the ire of billionaire Democratic donor George Soros.

Gillibrand was one of the loudest voices demanding for Franken to resign last year after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced. A photo of him pretending to grope a woman on an airplane caused the biggest stir, and he eventually quit the Senate in January.

According to a recent story in The Washington Post, Soros is none too pleased with Gillibrand because he liked Franken, and Soros hopes she does not run for president in 2020.

Gillibrand told HuffPost she is secure in how she handled the Franken matter.

“If standing up for women who have been wronged makes George Soros mad, that’s on him,” Gillibrand told the website. “But I won’t hesitate to always do what I think is right. For nearly a year, we have seen countless acts of courage as women and men have spoken hard truths about sexual assault and sexual harassment and demanded accountability.

“I stand with them in this new watershed moment of important change in our society on what we deem as acceptable. It is clear that we must put our morals and the valuing of women ahead of party loyalty. When someone does something wrong, you have to speak up and be counted, whether it’s President Trump, or a Democratic colleague.”
