A manhunt is underway for the suspected killer of President George H.W. Bush’s former cardiologist, police announced Wednesday.
Joseph James Pappas, 65, is believed to have fatally shot Dr. Mark Hausknecht in an act of revenge for his deceased mother, who died on the operating table 20 years ago, authorities said at a press conference.
Pappas is considered armed and dangerous and may be suicidal, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo. He has not been seen in 24 to 36 hours, Acevedo said, and had sent a text to an acquaintance saying he was going to kill himself.
“He’s dangerous, he’s capable and if you spot him, please call 911,” Acevedo said. “We need to find this guy. If he’s committed suicide, we need the body. If he’s alive, we need to find him.”
Police had earlier released video of the killing that took place as the prominent surgeon was riding his bike to work at the Houston Methodist Hospital and the Debakey Heart & Vascular Center.
Police have been to Pappas’ home twice and obtained a warrant to search the premises. He was not there, Acevedo said.
