Chuck Schumer Hits Back at Grassley on Brett Kavanaugh

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday hit back at Republican Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley’s assertions that he had already made up his mind to oppose Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and that his push for documents was in bad faith.

“The Senate and the American people deserve to have a full vetting of the nominee, just like you asked for and Democrats gave you for Justice Elena Kagan,” the New York Democrat said in a Twitter spree. “Republicans should want to see these documents just as much as Democrats.”

Schumer has been warring with Grassley and other Republicans for the full release of Kavanaugh’s documents as White House staff secretary to former President George W. Bush.

Grassley, the Iowa Republican, in a column Monday in The Wall Street Journal said the Democratic requests “ring hollow, especially coming from senators who have already declared their opposition to Judge Kavanaugh and initially refused even to meet with him.”

“I will not put taxpayers on the hook for a fishing expedition.”

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, a federal appellate court judge in Washington, to succeed retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Kennedy, 82, was nominated in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan.

Grassley said last week that Kavanaugh could be confirmed by October despite the Democratic push for the Bush records.
