Poll: More Than Half Say Race Relations Worse Under Trump

Fifty-five percent of voters say race relations have gotten worse since President Donald Trump took office, while 16 percent say they have gotten better, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.

Eighteen percent say race relations have remained the same since Trump took office.

The poll comes about a year after violence broke out during a rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia. Trump had remarked there were “some very fine people on both sides” of the violent clashes, Politico noted.

Here are some other highlights from the poll:

  • 51 percent of white voters say race relations have worsened since Trump took office; 18 percent say they have gotten better and 20 percent say they have stayed the same.
  • 79 percent of black voters say race relations have gotten worse; 5 percent say they have improved and 8 percent say they are about the same.
  • 60 percent of Hispanics say race relations have worsened; 13 percent say they have improved and 12 percent say they have stayed the same.
  • 25 percent of Republicans say race relations have gotten worse under Trump; 35 percent say they have improved and 29 percent say they have stayed the same.
  • 82 percent of Democrats say race relations have worsened; 4 percent say they have improved and 9 percent say they have stayed the same.
  • 43 percent of voters approve of the president’s job performance, while 52 percent disapprove.
  • 42 percent of voters say they would vote for the Democratic candidate in their district if the election was held today, compared to 36 percent who would cast their ballot for the Republican candidate. Twenty-two percent had no opinion.

The poll, conducted August 2-6, surveyed 1,994 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
