Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told Fox News on Wednesday he is sending a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray to ask why the bureau did not inform President Donald Trump it had concerns about Carter Page as it told Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., five years ago that one of her employees could be an agent of the Chinese government, a move that led to his dismissal.
“Is there a double standard here?” Graham asked on “The Story With Martha MacCallum.” “If this is a counterintelligence investigation or criminal investigation, the FBI should have told President Trump that they had concerns about [George] Papadopoulos and Page.
“Why didn’t they do for Trump what they did for Feinstein?”
When asked to explain in more detail the reason for the letter, Graham suggested the FBI was playing political favorites.
“I’m saying, what’s going with the FBI?” he said. “Why do you tell a Democrat when they hire somebody connected to China, it could happen to anyone’s office. When the FBI finds out that somebody is working for us and may have connections to a foreign government, they should tell us. Dianne Feinstein acted responsibly.
“When it comes to the Trump campaign, why didn’t they tell us about Papadopoulos or Carter Page? And at the end of the day, what has Carter Page done wrong?”
Page, the onetime Trump adviser who was at the center of highly contentious accusations by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee the FBI abused its surveillance powers by wiretapping him, was believed to have been “collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government” during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, according to the FBI.
Graham, who played golf with Trump on Sunday, also gave the president credit for the sanctions on Iran, saying they are long overdue, and for taking on “thugs and dictators.”
Regarding what they spoke about during their golf outing, Graham told Fox News: “He thinks this is a witch hunt and he didn’t do anything wrong . . . I don’t blame him for being frustrated. This has been going on for a very long time.”
