California Rep. Devin Nunes told a gathering of Republican donors last week that the GOP needed to keep control of the House to protect President Donald Trump, and that the conservative bid to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had stalled because it would delay the Senate’s possible confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, NBC News reported Wednesday night. MCNBC aired parts of a secret recording made by a member of a progressive group who attended the meeting in Spokane, Wash. In it, Nunes is heard saying: “If Sessions won’t unrecuse and Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones. . . Which is really the danger . . . we have to keep all these seats. We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.” Nunes also said the problem with impeaching Rosenstein is timing: “Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice?” Recent polls indicate that Democrats may be poised to win a majority of House seats in the midterm election.
