Billionaire activist Tom Steyer, the Democratic donor behind the major campaign to impeach President Donald Trump, on Sunday told BuzzFeed News he was not considering a 2020 run and called the president “reckless and dangerous and lawless.”
“This is a historic time,” Steyer said. “If you step back for one second and think about this president, the most corrupt president in American history — [he is] somebody who is breaking the law on a daily basis, somebody who is reckless and dangerous and lawless,” Steyer told Audi Cornish on BuzzFeed News’ Facebook show, “Profile.”
Steyer, whose “Need to Impeach” campaign has gotten more than five million supporters, also pushed back on Democrats criticizing his efforts – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi last month said impeachment would be a “gift” to Republicans and told Steyer to spend his money attacking the Republican tax overhaul.
“They say that they’re worried it’ll encourage Republicans to show up at the polls in November, so we actually polled that,” Steyer said. “This isn’t in the top three issues they care about.”
“If you look at what Republicans are using in their advertising, which is a pretty good measure of what they think will drive their constituents to the polls, it’s taxes, immigration, and Nancy Pelosi,” he added. “It’s not impeachment.”
When Cornish pressed him on whether he would run for president in 2020, Steyer flat-out said no and that his group was focusing on the 2018 midterm elections.
“We are totally focused on the outcome then,” he said, adding that he thought it was more important for him to try to make bigger changes from the outside.
“I ask, what can I do? I will definitely be working full-time full-time the day after this election for social justice. The question is what can I do that will be the most impactful and positive.”
