Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett has endorsed Gwen Graham for governor of Florida, praising the longtime Democrat as having a “heart for people and a passion for the Sunshine state.”
The Democratic gubernatorial primary will be held Aug. 28 and RealClearPolitics gives Graham a 7.7 percent edge over fellow Democrats Phillip Levine, Jeff Greene, Andrew Gillum and Chris King.
“Like her Dad, Gwen will put the interests of everyday Floridians first,” Buffett said of Graham, a former Florida state representative and daughter of the late Gov. Bob Graham, with whom he cofounded the Save the Manatee Club in 1981.
“She’ll protect our precious natural environment, ensure we have strong public schools and affordable health care.”
In a veiled swipe at Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is finishing his second and final term, Buffett added: “It’s been too long since we have had a governor for all the people. For that reason, I am supporting my friend, Democrat Gwen Graham, for governor and I encourage ya’ll to do the same.”
Buffett – whose hits include “Margaritaville,” “Cheeseburger In Paradise” and “Come Monday” – will play a “Get Out the Vote Concert for Gwen” on Aug. 23 in South Florida.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face either U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who is endorsed by President Donald Trump or state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.
