America has given the world plenty of iconic cars, but the Mustang has to be its greatest. From movie star to racing car, the Ford Mustang has captured the attention of the public since it first appeared in 1964. One of the most legendary incarnations of this pony came in the form of the homologation special Boss 429.

The Ford Mustang offered exactly what the American buying public wanted at its launch. It looked good, could be had with a strong V8 engine, and was relatively affordable. However, Chevrolet soon saw how well the Mustang was doing and so introduced its own four-wheeled American dream in the form of the Camaro.

It wasn’t to be the Mustang’s only challenger as such cars became a status symbol for manufacturers. This sparked the muscle car wars that still rages on today, but it arguably hit its peak in the late 1960s and early ’70s when the battle went from the road to the race track.

Chrysler’s 426 Hemi engine was a monster and was put to good use in NASCAR, dethroning Ford and putting the blue oval’s reputation on the line. Retaliation came in the form of a new 429 cubic-inch V8 engine which was placed into the Mustang for racing homologation. In 1969 the Mustang Boss 429 became one of the most menacing factory Fords you could buy. Road cars were rated at 375bhp after being detuned by Ford for everyday use, however, some claim that the engine is capable of almost 600bhp when unrestricted.

RM Sotheby’s Auburn Fall auction in Indiana USA will feature one of these fabled Boss Mustangs. This 1970 example is just 1 of 500 produced that year and is finished in an eye-catching shade of Grabber Blue. This four owner car has covered just over 40,500 miles and comes with all of its original paperwork. It has spent 30 years in ‘proper heated storage’ and has recently had $10,000 of work carried out to ensure it is running perfectly. The white vinyl interior is totally original as is much of the car.

The 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 has an estimate of $235,000 – $250,000. View it here.
