Shots rang out during a high school football game in Florida on Friday, and the teens who were in attendance have described the terrifying experience.
“The cheerleaders started running first,” a teen named Reginald told WPEC. “I couldn’t tell if it was gunshots or people hitting the stairs with they feet.”
Two adults were reportedly shot. One of the cheerleaders who Reginald said scattered in the aftermath was a teen girl named Dwyer.
“I just jumped the fence and I just ran, and they were all running toward the road,” Dwyer recalled. Then we started running toward the fence instead of the road to get away, go as further as we could. And I got like cuts from jumping over the fence, and we jumped over another barbed wire fence. And we just kept walking until we got to the houses and we tried to get people to answer and nobody would answer.”
Dwyer wept as she described the traumatic experience.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting victims were both adults. One was found at the scene, while the other was driven to a hospital by a friend.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera told WPEC the shooting occurred after a group of students got into a fight during the practice game at Palm Beach Central High School.
One victim reportedly suffered critical wounds.
An investigation is underway. No suspects were in custody as of Saturday morning.
