An Illinois mother says she was mom-shamed for allowing her 8-year-old daughter to walk the family dog by herself.
A resident saw little Dorothy Widen walking her Maltese around the block in their Chicago neighborhood and called police, who showed up at the family’s front door, mom Corey Widen said.
“It was terrifying for all of us,” Widen told Inside Edition. “It startled her right away, so she burst into tears and ran away.”
The little girl said the incident made her feel “sad, a little bit scared.”
Police took no action against the mother, but the state Department of Children and Family Services was notified and an investigation was opened to see if Widen was neglecting her children, she said.
The department found no wrongdoing and closed the case.
The mother said she sees nothing wrong with letting her daughter walk the block around their home. Asked if she will continue to allow Dorothy to walk the dog, the mom replied, “Nobody will dictate” how she raises her children.
