‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Still Tops Box Office Sales After Second Weekend In Theaters

“Crazy Rich Asians” topped the box office in ticket sales for the second consecutive week after debuting in theaters Aug. 15, according to a studio estimation Sunday.

The “Crazy Rich Asians” flick by Warner Bros. brought in an estimated $25 million in ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters from Friday to Sunday, The Associated Press reported. This romantic comedy is the first blockbuster to have an entirely Asian and Asian-American ensemble cast in 25 years and grossed $76.8 million in total since its debut.

“Crazy Rich Asians” brought in $35.3 million from Wednesday to Sunday. It brought in another $26.5 million over its first weekend.

The movie’s sales for the weekend fell 6 percent from its opening debut. Movies usually drop by 50 percent by the second weekend if it is not a holiday release. However, the film reaped in approximately the same amount of ticket sales from the first Saturday to the second.

“I’ve been telling my team that Big Foot sightings are more common than zero percent Saturday drops,” said Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros., according to The AP.

He also noted that the demographics of moviegoers watching “Crazy Rich Asians” is changing. (RELATED: Texts Surface Of Asia Argento Claiming She Had Sex With Jimmy Bennett)

The first weekend brought in approximately a 44 percent Asian-American audience. The number jumped to 27 percent during its second weekend in theaters. However, more Caucasian and Hispanic Americans bought tickets for the movie instead.

The movie also reaped in $1.8 million in Singapore, where it was set to take place.

“Crazy Rich Asians” movie is an adaptation of the 2013 book by Kevin Kwan.
