GOP Senate Hopeful Tells Mass. Voters: Boot Warren to Stop 'Extremism'

Boston attorney and investor John Kingston, who hopes to unseat Sen. Elizabeth Warren this fall, says the Democratic lawmaker represents “extremism from the left.”

“I know what I’m focusing on, which is beating Elizabeth Warren … I’m in this race to stand against that form of extremism from the left and provide the voters in Massachusetts with a good choice,” Kingston told WBUR News.

“They want people that can reach across the divides. Show independence of mind and character, and bring people together. They should be looking at me.”

Kingston, who once renounced his membership in the Republican Party over Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, has yet to say whether he would vote for Trump in 2020 as his two primary opponents have proclaimed.

“I am still waiting for a lot more to happen. It’s very early innings as far as I’m concerned,” Kingston said.

Asked by WBUR’s Bob Oakes what he thought about Trump in the wake of the convictions of the president’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his ex-attorney Michael Cohen, Kingston said:

“I’m glad that Manafort and Cohen were caught and convicted. What effect it has on the presidency remains to be seen.”

He added: “I stand with the very strong voices in Washington who say that those are bad ideas. You know the [special counsel Robert] Mueller investigation should be able to run its course. We need the truth. We deserve the truth as Americans.”

Kingston’s primary opponents are small business owner Beth Lindstrom, a former director of the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, and Geoff Diehl, who represents the 7th Plymouth District in the Massachusetts House.
