Dem David Garcia Will Battle Incumbent Gov. Doug Ducey In Arizona Gubernatorial Race After Primary Win

Republican incumbent Gov. Doug Ducey beat his challenger, former Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett on Tuesday with a landslide primary victory, ensuring that he will face off against the Democratic nominee, former Arizona Department of Education official David Garcia.

Ducey won the nomination with 71 percent of the vote, beating out Bennett who took 29 percent, The New York Times reported Tuesday. Garcia, beat his opponents, state Sen. Steve Farley, and entrepreneur Kelly Fryer, with 48.3 percent of the votes.

Ducey earned President Donald Trump’s endorsement on Monday as the president tweeted, “Doug is strong on Crime, the Border, and our Second Amendment. Loves our Military & our Vets. He has my full and complete Endorsement.” (RELATED: Trump Endorses Doug Ducey For Arizona Governor)

Education will be a pivotal issue in the upcoming midterm elections. Garcia, a professor at Arizona State University and a political progressive who campaigned on Medicare-for-all and anti-lobbyist platforms, will go up against Ducey, whose approval ratings declined after teachers staged a protest in the state’s capital to demand higher wages, according to reports by AZ Central news.
