Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. argued during a new interview that a second special counsel needs to be appointed to investigate how the FBI and the Department of Justice as a whole kickstarted the Russia investigation.
Graham was on “The Laura Ingraham Show” and cited newly released text messages between FBI lawyer Lisa Page and a now former FBI agent Peter Strzok, who in late 2016 discussed leaking information about the Russia probe to the media.
“These new text messages from Sztrok and Page about leaking information about the FISA warrant process to the media is just one in a series of events that scream for a special counsel,” Graham said. “What I can’t get over is how much more has to be uncovered at the Department of Justice regarding a political agenda?”
Graham went on to accuse the DOJ and the FBI of turning political during the 2016 presidential campaign, which continued after President Donald Trump won the election.
“The Department of Justice and the FBI were political operatives when it came to Trump, they weren’t investigators,” he said. “This screams for a special counsel. … Let’s have a DOJ investigated by somebody outside the Department of Justice.”
The FBI began investigating the Trump campaign in 2016 over allegations that it may have been colluding with Russia to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. In May 2017, former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel to oversee the Russia probe.
