Sen. Feinstein: GOP 'Rushing' to 'Repeat Past Mistakes'

Republicans are “rushing” to “repeat past mistakes” from Anita Hill’s 1991 testimony against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, according to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calf.

“In 1991, five days after Anita Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment became public against her wishes, the Judiciary Committee held three days of controversial hearings,” Feinstein wrote in a statement to NBC News. “Now, just one week after Christine Blasey Ford shared her story, Republicans want to repeat past mistakes, rushing the process to hold a hearing.

“What’s worse at that time, President [George H.W.] Bush asked the FBI to do its job and perform an investigation looking into Anita Hill’s allegations, which it did. Now, under the Trump administration, Republicans want to do even less by blocking any investigation into Dr. Ford’s allegations.

“I’m disappointed the FBI and White House are failing to take even the most basic steps to investigate this matter. We must not repeat the mistakes of the past and rush the process before we’re able to gather more information and the FBI is able to reopen and complete the background investigation.”

Feinstein’s statement came as Anita Hill wrote an op-ed for The New York Times, saying “the public expects better from our government than we got in 1991.”

Another Feinstein statement posted on her website, claimed “it’s impossible to take this process seriously” and “this is another attempt by Republicans to rush this nomination.”
