Washington Nationals’ catcher Kurt Suzuki is getting backlash for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during his White House visit Monday.

The story: After President Trump invited Suzuki to the podium during the White House celebration of his team’s World Series victory, he pulled out the red hat out of his jacket and placed it on his head. “I love him,” said the president, hugging the athlete.

“I love you all. Thank you,” Suzuki said.

Critics: The move drew backlash on social media. In a now-deleted tweet, The Palmer Report described it as “a form of hate speech,” The Week’s Kathryn Krawczyk called the hug a “‘Titanic’ reenactment with the president,” and Jezebel’s Megan Reynolds referred to it as a “nightmarish grope situation. … Though I did declare that I would gladly sleep with an entire baseball team if only they would let me, I am amending my public desire thusly: Suzuki is off the fuck list, as are any other Nationals that attended this grotesque display of patriotism.”

“If he wore a swastika hat, he’d get banned from baseball – and a MAGA hat is no different,” the Palmer Report wrote in another tweet.

Other comments: “Fox & Friends” hosts Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt reacted to some of the remarks aimed at the president and Suzuki. “All he did was support the president of the United States. The president of the country he is in,” said Kilmeade. “You’re hated if you walk up to that microphone, support him and put on that hat,” noted Earhardt.
