In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) slammed Twitter for banning ads from groups that fight against climate change but allowing ads from companies like Exxon.

Her tweets: Warren’s remarks come a week after Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the platform will be banning campaign ads from politicians, ads that refer to an election or candidate, or ads about sensitive political issues.

“Twitter’s new ad policy will allow fossil fuel companies to buy ads defending themselves and spreading misleading info — but won’t allow organizations fighting the climate crisis to buy ads holding those companies accountable. We need accountability,” Warren tweeted.

Dorsey responded to Warren’s comments the same day, saying the company will take into account Warren’s remarks when it announces its new ad policies on Nov. 15.

“We haven’t announced our new rules yet. They come out 11/15. Taking all this into consideration,” Dorsey tweeted.

Warren, a top Democratic contender for the White House, has pledged to break up tech giants like Facebook and Amazon and has specifically targeted Facebook over its stance to political ads.

During a recent speech at Georgetown University, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended his company’s stance, arguing that “banning political ads favors incumbents and whoever the media covers.”

This is the first time Warren has taken aim at Twitter over its ad policies, according to CNBC.

“It turns out if you’re a giant corporation with millions to spend misleading people on your record of accelerating the climate crisis, that’s exactly what you can—and probably will—do,” she wrote in a separate tweet.

Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal, public policy and trust and safety lead, explained that the company’s policy will ban policy bans “ads that advocate for or against legislative issues of national importance (such as: climate change, healthcare, immigration, national security, taxes).”
