Yoshihide Suga set to be new Japanese PM after winning party vote

Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga was elected leader of the governing Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, paving the way for him to become the country’s next prime minister.Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga, 71, secured an overwhelming victory over two rivals – former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba and former foreign minister Fumio Kishida in the intra-party race.Suga is mostly likely to be nominated to succeed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at an extraordinary parliamentary session to be held this week. Abe announced he was stepping down for health reasons.
