Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake are more popular with Democrats in their home state than members of the GOP, according to a new poll from CBS News.

McCain, Arizona’s senior senator, is the more popular of the two with Democrats, but the less popular with Republicans. When asked to rate McCain as favorable or unfavorable:

  • 20 percent of Republicans said favorable;
  • 68 percent of Republicans said unfavorable;
  • 62 percent of Democrats said favorable;
  • 17 percent of Democrats said unfavorable.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized and ridiculed McCain, focusing on his vote against the Republican health care bill, despite the senator’s battle with brain cancer.

Flake, a Trump critic who is soon to retire, is less popular than McCain with both Republicans and Democrats:

  • 16 percent of Republicans said favorable;
  • 71 percent of Republicans said unfavorable;
  • 35 percent of Democrats said favorable;
  • 40 percent of Democrats said unfavorable.
  • 22 percent of independents said favorable;
  • 53 percent of independents said unfavorable.

 YouGov conducted the poll of 1,001 registered voters in Arizona from June 21-22, 2018 with a margin of error of 3.7 percent.
