As NBA All-Star Game features HBCUs, all three referees are alums

ATLANTA — When NBA referee Tom Washington told his mom, Mildred, a North Carolina A&T graduate, that this year’s All-Star game would feature HBCUs and he’d be working the game, she was blown away. “It’s almost like traditionally, we’ve carried that HBCU torch, and I told her about it, and she was ecstatic to find out about it and said, ‘That’s awesome,’ ” Washington said.
