El Dorado Sheriff John D’Agostini slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday for not showing up at the funeral of Deputy Brian Ishmael, who was allegedly murdered by two illegal immigrants.
The story: D’Agostini’s remarks came during a press conference on the same day a federal grand jury indicted two undocumented immigrants in connection with the murder.
According to authorities, the incident was part of a dispute between several men involved in an illegal marijuana growing operation, at least two of whom were illegal Mexican nationals staying in the U.S.
When one of the men suspected he wouldn’t be paid the agreed amount, he called 911 claiming he was being robbed. After Ishmael arrived on the scene, one man shot the deputy above his bulletproof vest, killing him almost instantly, according to Fox News.

“[Newsom] had an important meeting with PG&E,” D’Agostini said Thursday. “One morning out of his busy schedule to respect my deputy and his family I don’t think is too much to ask.”
“Please call this what this is,” D’Agostini said. “Don’t soften it. This tragedy was due to an illegal alien tending an illegal marijuana grow who murdered a deputy. That’s what it is.”
On Thursday, Newsom’s office told The Sacramento Bee that the governor sent representatives to attend Ishmael’s funeral on Tuesday and wrote a letter to Ishmael’s family.
During the same press conference, U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott denounced the state’s drug and sanctuary laws, which he said prolonged the arrest of the suspected killers and may have allowed other possible participants in the crime time to leave.
“We shouldn’t have to go through these hurdles to try to figure out who two guys are from Mexico who just killed a deputy sheriff,” Scott said.
