This Thursday marks National Bikini Day and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate it than with our favorite models’ latest snaps in the two-piece swimsuit.
Created in 1946 by Parisian automotive engineer and designer Louis Reard, the bikini made its official debut when a candidate for a beauty contest wore the two-piece suit at the Molitar pool in Paris. His creation was named after the Bikini Atoll, where they had just tested the first nuclear bomb only four days earlier.
At first, the revealing suit was not popular, but thanks to Hollywood stars like Raquel Welch and Brigitte Bardot — not to mention music like the “Itsy Bitsy Teenie-Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” — sales for the suit began to take off in the 1960s.
To celebrate the day, we scoured the social media accounts of Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models like Emily Ratajkowski, Kate Upton, Barbara Palvin, Gigi Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, and many more.
Here are a few of the most recent shots they and others have shared wearing the two-piece. At times, the models wear nothing but the bikini bottoms. The photos come from all over the world.
Happy National Bikini Day!
