A GofundMe account set up in Michael Cohen’s name has raised more than $120,000 in one day, the Hill reports.
The account was started by Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, and has a goal of $500,000. Cohen on Tuesday pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts and implicated President Donald Trump by admitting in court that he made payments to two women who alleged to have had affairs with Trump, “in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office.”
He also told the court the payments were made to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
Cohen on the same day announced he had set up a “truth fund” to pay Cohen’s legal fees.
“On July 2, 2018, Michael Cohen declared his independence from Donald Trump and his commitment to tell the truth. On August 21, Michael Cohen made the decision to take legal responsibility and to continue his commitment to tell the truth,” the page’s description reads.
“Michael decided to put his family and his country first. Now Michael needs your financial help — to pay his legal fees. The Michael Cohen Truth Fund is a transparent trust account, with all donations going to help Michael Cohen and his family as he goes forward on his journey to tell the truth about Donald Trump,” it continues.
Davis said Cohen will continue to tell the truth, but pleaded with viewers of the networks he appeared on to help Cohen out as his family is “suffering.”
“We ask everybody who is interested in Michael being able to tell the truth to help him out,” Davis said.
