EU's von der Leyen 'deeply' regrets use of Irish border Brexit clause

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that triggering the emergency override clause of the Brexit deal on the Irish border was a regrettable error. “The bottom line is that mistakes were made in the process leading up to the decision,” the top EU official told EU lawmakers. “And I deeply regret that. But in the end we got it right.” The EU executive branch “will do its utmost to protect the peace in Northern Ireland,” she added.
