Everton lose at home to West Ham, miss chance to go second

Everton squandered the chance to go second in the Premier League as they were upended 1-0 at home by West Ham on New Year’s Day. Tomas Soucek scored the only goal of the game four minutes from time, from close range, as West Ham stayed 10th but moved level on points with Aston Villa in fifth. Everton, meanwhile, remained fourth, four points behind leaders Liverpool, who play at Southampton on Monday. Manchester United can go level on points with Liverpool if they beat Aston Villa in Friday’s late match.
