The two candidates to lead Germany’s governing conservatives into elections in September continued separate – and ever more frantic – negotiations on Monday. With no conclusion in late-night direct talks on Sunday between Armin Laschet and Markus Soeder, Soeder returned to Bavaria, where his Conservative Social Union (CSU) party is based.
