Germany's conservatives hoping to end chancellor candidate battle

The search by Germany’s centre-right for a candidate to succeed outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel could come to an end on Tuesday. After the executive board of Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) voted to back party leader Armin Laschet in a vote overnight, his rival Markus Soeder is set to address the issue in a statement at midday (1000 GMT). Prior to the vote, Soeder said he and his Christian Social Union (CSU) – the CDU’s Bavaria-based allies – would respect the CDU’s decision.
