Japan to increase bond issuance in FY 2021 due to virus impact

The government plans to issue 236.01 trillion yen ($2.3 trillion) worth of bonds in fiscal 2021, up 82.55 trillion yen from the initial plan for the current year, due to the fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Finance Ministry said Monday. The figure will grow for the second straight year on an initial basis, as the government has to issue more refinancing bonds to clear shorter-term bonds, which were additionally issued to secure financial resources for the government’s steps against the virus spread.
