Merkel rules out Merz bid for Economics Ministry

Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out a cabinet reshuffle after her one-time rival Friedrich Merz said he wanted to become Economics Minister. After being defeated on Saturday in the race to become party chief of the Christian Democrats (CDU), Merz tweeted that he had offered the new head of the CDU Armin Laschet to head up the ministry. But a government spokesman told dpa: “The Chancellor is not planning to reshuffle the government.” Speaking following his victory, Laschet told the digital convention that he planned to speak to Merz about his future contribution to the party.
