The New York Giants cut quarterback Davis Webb Sunday, according to multiple reports.
Quarterback Davis Webb is being waived, per source. Stunning move. Third round pick last year. Played well throughout summer.

In a stunning development, the Giants are waiving QB Davis Webb, according to an NFL source (and as @JordanRaanan Tweeted). Giants couldn’t find a trade partner, and he simply wasn’t a Pat Shurmur/Dave Gettleman guy.

I was absolutely stunned when I saw this news on Twitter. Webb was supposed to be the heir apparent to Eli Manning in New York. He was a third round pick last season, and there has been crazy hype about his abilities. It seemed like absolutely everybody thought the Giants would hand over the reins to him once Manning hung it up. Now, they just dumped him without any warning.
This honestly doesn’t make sense at all. It is incredibly rare that a guy drafted in the third round gets tossed aside after a single season. These are the types of decisions that can cause general managers huge headaches down the road. The Giants have invested more than $1.2 million into the third round pick for only a season of work. That’s not good economics when it comes to young players. Paying a guy north of a million bucks to never throw a pass is embarrassing, especially given the fact he’s only been on the roster for a year. That’s more money than Brock Osweiler and RGIII are set to make this season, and both of them might actually take some snaps. I sure do hope that the people running the show in New York know what they’re doing because this looks like a disastrous decision as of right now.
