Postal vote confirms Merkel ally Laschet as leader of CDU

Armin Laschet, the centrist premier of Germany’s most populous state, has been confirmed as the new leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU) in a postal vote, the party said Friday. Of the 980 postal ballots submitted, 796 were in favour of Laschet, the CDU said, adding that this amounted to roughly 83 per cent in favour of Laschet. Twenty-two people abstained.
