The Democratic National Committee announced on Friday that it would be moving forward with a new proposal that would prevent any candidate who isn’t a Democrat from winning the Democratic presidential nomination. The rule would likely shut Senator Bernie Sanders out of the running in 2020.

Sanders, who officially declared himself an Independent in October of 2017, has been at odds with the DNC since it was revealed that the 2016 Democratic primary was rigged in favor of his opponent, Hillary Clinton. (RELATED: Bernie Gets Confronted By CNN On Why His Candidates Are Losing)
When Clinton loyalist Tom Perez was elected to head the organization — following the ouster of former chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the interim leadership of Donna Brazile, both of whom were connected to Hillary Clinton — he tried to reunite the party by taking on Sanders supporter Keith Ellison as his co-chair.
Sanders recently lashed out at the DNC, however, saying that Tom Perez should not have endorsed incumbent New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo over his challenger, “Sex and the City” alum Cynthia Nixon.
Our Revolution, a group that spun off Sanders’ 2016 campaign, endorsed Nixon in that race.
