Sanders, a socialist from Vermont, said, “I think the entire Trump views on immigration is heartless. You know, in the last polls I’ve seen, some 80 percent of the American people believe we should provide legal status to the 1.8 million people in the DACA program who are eligible for DACA and that’s a program that Trump killed.”
Sanders did not specify which poll conducted the research he referred to during the interview. The Vermont senator later added, “The American people believe that we should move forward to comprehensive immigration reform and Trump is moving in exactly the wrong direction.”
The president’s chief of staff, John Kelly, discussed immigration in a Sunday NPR interview. He was asked about the attorney general’s comments in regards to arresting mothers who come into the United States illegally with their children.
Kelly said, “I wouldn’t put it quite that way. The children will be taken care of — put into foster care or whatever. But the big point is they elected to come illegally into the United States and this is a technique that no one hopes will be used extensively or for very long.”
Later in the CNN interview, host Jake Tapper asked Sanders why he isn’t supporting Gina Haspel, President Trump’s nomination to lead the CIA, when he supported John Brennan under the Obama Administration.
“It goes, I think, deeper than that. That is, I think, the foreign policy we have seen from Mr. Trump,” Sanders responded.
