Senate votes 56-44 to proceed with Trump impeachment trial

The US Senate has voted 56 to 44 to proceed with the Senate impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump, in a largely party-line vote. Six Republicans sided with Democrats to affirm the constitutionality of an impeachment trial of a president who has left office. Democrats will need at least 17 Republicans to join them in order to achieve the two-thirds majority necessary to convict Trump.
