Slovak president officially appoints Eduard Heger as prime minister

Former finance minister Eduard Heger was officially appointed Slovakia’s prime minister on Thursday, in what has been a stormy period in the Central European nation’s politics. President Zuzana Caputova named Heger as prime minister after the conservative-populist Igor Matovic resigned on Sunday, following months of conflict among his coalition over coronavirus policy. Two of the four governing parties had threatened to leave the coalition if Matovic, who only took office in March 2020, remained head of government.
