U.K. Foreign Minister Boris Johnson resigns, raising speculation of leadership challenge

U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has resigned his post, reports said Monday, ramping up speculation that he’s preparing to launch a leadership challenge against U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May. Johnson, who was named as foreign secretary in July 2016 by May, becomes the third minister to step down after the Brexit agreement sealed Friday that seemed to unify the U.K. cabinet around a single plan as EU leaders press for action. David Davis on Sunday night stepped down as Brexit Secretary as he disagreed with the strategy that appears to put Britain on the path of a so-called ‘soft’ Brexit. Johnson after the June 2016 Brexit referendum had widely been expected to aim to become the U.K.’s next prime minister, but decided not to stand for leadership of the Conservative Party. The pound turned lower after reports of Johnson’s resignation, losing grip of the $1.3300 handle to fall to $1.3277.
